The Polish Competition Authority conditionally clears an acquisition in the grocery market (Auchan/Real)

February 2014

Bulletin e-Competitions April 2014-I

In January 2014, the Polish Competition Authority (UOKiK) conditionally approved the proposed acquisition of 57 Real hypermarkets in Poland by Auchan Polska, an operator of 27 hypermarkets and 31 supermarkets in Poland. The acquisition is conditional on the sale of eight of the Real hypermarkets.

In November 2012, the French Groupe Auchan signed an agreement with the German Metro Group for the sale of Real’s business in Central and Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Romania and Russia). The concentration was initially notified to the European Commission (Case No COMP/M.6822). The examination of the Polish part of the transaction was later referred to UOKiK.
